Excimer Laser

Is it possible to get rid of glasses and contact lenses ?

Many patients whose eyes have refractive errors are able to see clearly due to glasses and contact lenses, but due to their jobs and careers, they need to see the clearest they possibly can without glasses.  People may wish to be free of the need to use glasses and contact lenses.  They may simply want to live without using glasses.

Excimer laser, is a type of laser used to treat refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).  It has been used since the start of the 1980s. Excimer laser gives a new shape to the cornea by trimming the corneal tissue.

Who can it be applied to ?

No matter which technique is applied, prior to excimer laser treatment, a detailed ophthalmic and retinal examination should be performed.  The corneal topography and the corneal thickness should be examined. For the implementation of the excimer laser treatment the patient is required to be over 18 years of age and should not have any other eye disease that would prevent the process. There is no upper age limit as long as there is no cataract or early cataract symptoms.

Another important issue to be considered is that in the last 6 months or 1 year the degree of glasses or lenses should not have changed by more than 0.50. Up to -10 diopters of myopia,  up to -5 diopters of hyperopia and up to +4 diopters of astigmatism can easily be treated.

To prevent the results of the eye examination being affected, patients using soft contact lenses should remove them at least 1 week prior to the examination. For patients using rigid or semi-rigid lenses this period is at least 4 weeks.

Excimer laser treatment is painless and ends in about 10 minutes.

For a period of time after laser treatment there may be a feeling of  itching or stinging and tearing may occur. After a short period of rest you can go home. There is no need to bandage the eyes. It is normal to have slightly blurred vision immediately after the operation. It is possible to go to work the next day. The eyes should not be rubbed for a week. The majority of patients recover within the same day.

Excimer laser treatment can be applied to the eye using different techniques. PRK, TransPRK, Lasik, Femto – lasik, Wavefront – lasik and PresbyMAX are some of them. The doctor will decide which method is most suitable for you as a result of a comprehensive eye examination and tests.
